Addis Gadfly

“ …[I] am a sort of gadfly… and the state is a great and noble steed who is tardy in his motions owing to his very size, and requires to be stirred into life." – Socrates, 4 BC

Addisgadfly is a fly that lands on, stings, and annoys horses and cattle, at times keeping them from falling asleep. When the Greek philosopher, Socrates, said the quote above, he was on trial for his life. He described his role in Greek politics as that of the gadfly, “to sting people and whip them into a fury, all in the service of truth.”

With the name“Addis Gadfly’’ we want to allude to this Socratistic notion of awakening people by questioning and of building a more conscientious society. Additionally, the Amharic word addis, which means new, represents not only our capital, but also the new and fresh take on Ethiopian arts that we want to Introduce through our magazine.
