Art that Matters

Art is intertwined with our sense of identity, culture and history. Art propagates culture, politics and social beliefs. It would be easy for consumers of art to lose sight of their own cultures and views if they consume art that is only outside of their own culture. If we, as Ethiopians who historically depend on oral history, don’t tell and share our stories in various art forms, we will eventually forget our culture, our histories and our identities. We will forget who we are.

Art holds a mirror to society and shows us where we fail. It shows us the need to support social issues that include gender and ethnic sensitivity. But it also shows us the beauty and redemption in humanity. It allows us to look inside and outside ourselves to empathize with one another and with those we see as different from us. Art makes us better people.

Addis Gadfly magazine will benefit both creators of art as well as consumers of art. It will not only share topics of interest, celebrate and encourage Ethiopian achievements, and demand for quality output, but it will also help propagate our past, our culture, our styles and our innovations.
